Monastiraki and Psyrri are among the most interesting parts of Athens to explore on foot. Within a few minutes' walk you find ancient monuments, old markets and lively neighborhoods. Here are a few places worth seeing, all close to Alysso.

Monastiraki Square

The square takes its name from the small church of Panagia Pantanassa, which once belonged to a monastery. From here you can see the Acropolis above the rooftops and set off for everything else.

The flea market

Around the square and along Ifestou Street stretches the famous Monastiraki market, with antiques, books, clothes, souvenirs and small shops for every taste. On Sundays the flea market at Avyssinias Square has a charm of its own.

The Ancient and Roman Agora

A few steps from Monastiraki is the Ancient Agora, the heart of public life in ancient Athens, with the remarkably well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus. A little further east, the Roman Agora and the Tower of the Winds show Athens in Roman times, while Hadrian's Library stands right next to the square.

The Acropolis

From Monastiraki the walk up to the Acropolis is easy: about 15 minutes on foot to the entrance. It is worth going early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the light is softer and the crowds are smaller.

The lanes of Psyrri

On the way back, get lost in the lanes of Psyrri, with their street art, small workshops and cafés. It is the perfect neighborhood to end your walk with a good meal.

A stop for food

Alysso is at Navarchou Apostoli 11, about 5 minutes from Monastiraki Square. We are open every day from 1 pm to midnight, for lunch after the Acropolis or dinner after your walk. See our menu.
